Last time I wrote the article online, but the connect suddenly cut out. I have to write it twice. besides, midterm exam is beginning, so I am late to put this work. OK! Let's started.
1. In your opinion or experience, why do some students chose to cheat? What are some of the different reasons students give? Do you know people who cheated in high school or college? (you can respond generally. I am not looking for names).
My opinion is that they haven't prepared already or they just don't want to study anymore, so the students decide to cheat in the big exam. But most of the reason is they haven't prepared enough and they just really don't want to fail in the classes. The second reason may they don't expect others to look down on them as a loser. If they were caught red hand, in Taiwan monitor commonly would not caught students who was cheating in the class and they would pretend to focus on other things, normally students gave excuses instead of truth. I merely think one excuse that they would give usually. The one is that "Not as much as you think, I just glanced at the paper once, ok?" They would say it in the right and self-confident way, seems like they were right. Seldom students would ask for evidence or witness. Wherever in the school or in the college, of course I have seen many students cheated. I was an informer, and I can surely tell you that I have cheated in classes is under five times in my life. Come on, I am not good at telling a lie. I know whom is usually cheating in many classes in the university and I think the classmates would often notice them, discuss them in their own privacy group. But in my opinion, people who really has capability seldom to cheat if it is not necessary.
1. In the US if you were caught plagiarizing assignments you would immediately be given a failing grade. You could also be immediately expelled from the university for "academic dishonesty". Since the reason you were expelled would be written on your transcripts, every other university you applied to would know you once got caught cheating. What types of punishment are generally given for cheating on exams or class work in Taiwan? Do you think these punishments are a sufficient deterrent to cheating? What do you think the punishment should be?
Oh! The punishment of U.S. is very nice, and I think it can be listed in the punishment items of Taiwan. But I heard Ruth have ever said that American students normally cheat in classes, not stick by the rule as our thought. The punishment by rule In Taiwan, if students cheat on exams, they will be recorded with two major demerit. By the way, if they get three major demerit, they must be draw out. However, teachers don't sentence them like that, they will ask them to clean bathroom, floors, or their own workroom on Saturday or Sunday. Well, how about the punishment of cheating class work? I don't know. I think few teachers caught the students whom cheated on class work, teachers did not often care about it. In short, this world are weird nowadays. Even in America, these discipline are not a sufficient deterrent to cheating. Maybe we could make the earth a little bit change from media itself or ourselves, although the idea of changing media seems impossible. Suppose I were the director of academic affairs, I will record it on diploma and leave a spare documentary on computer in the school. If some famous bosses knew it, they would make a right decision.
3. You will have to think creatively for your answer here: Even with the threat of severe punishment, the readings above indicate that cheating is still a problem. One reason is because students naturally assume they will get away with it and won't get caught. Therefore, severe consequences probably won't be enough, by themselves, to stop students from cheating (if you don't think you will get caught, it's easy to ignore the possible consequences). What can be done? What real solutions should be tried? Are teachers and students in perpetual race to see who can get trickier? What other solutions can be tried to stop cheating? Be specific with your suggestions.
(If this question is hard, here are some possible solutions to think about: reward students who catch their classmates with extra credit; expel students from school, forever, for the first time; hire detectives or student helpers to look for cheaters; do nothing at all; other creative solutions)
The cheating problem disturbed monitor for a long time; still, it's being thousand years' problem. It seems not possible to boil down. I think the real solution can be tried are first move to well-educated country or second to strict educate by their own parents when they were young. If the one who doesn't have the both environment, they just could depend on themselves or their friends. I should mention that environment is absolutely important which everyone knows it, but in many countries, even in developed countries, their parents or government don't care about it. Don't know why they prefer caring about how to make more money to educating their promising children. It's also weird that there always having students to cheat, even the test is open book in the class. Maybe they were not afraid of teachers or rules, or they don't think it twice before they leap. How to stop cheating? I have searched on websites, and list some suggestion to tell you. 1. Divide the exam paper into various versions for students, or random questions on the paper for them. 2. Put white paper on their desk insure that they don't write the answer on their desk(You have to take back afterward.) and ask them to take only one pen and one eraser for preventing they already write the answer on it. 3. give each one some different essay questions and let them open book. Furthermore, I think hire detectives to look for cheaters this idea is splendid.
